My dear Bamma,

You were not just my grandma. You were my friend, my roommate (for a short but incredibly poignant period) and my teacher.

You taught me grace and class.

You taught me that there is always something to celebrate - and celebrate we did!

You taught me what it meant to be a warrior. Your reserves of strength impress and inspire me today and always will.

You embraced life and demonstrated how the small, but finer things in life bring such joy. A martini a day. A house filled with music (preferably Frank Sinatra!) - and family.

You struck the delicate balance between being strong-minded but open-minded.

You have always been such an important force in my life.

You have been my support, my guide, my inspiration.

Many, many moons ago, when Mikey was in the hospital or traveling to California for his cochlear implant, you became my rock and my safe haven.

For my formidable senior year of high school, when my parents moved across the state, you opened your home to me and we lived together for the year. It was during that time that you became my confidant and friend.

I miss you.

I miss the bond we shared - and how that bond developed and deepened from childhood into adulthood.

You are a part of me now and I will do everything I can to keep your memory alive by living a life of grace, class, strength and celebration.

Although I only met Mrs Banks twice in my life, I instantly recognized her as the “mother” that everybody wanted to have. She was kind, thoughtful and fearless. Not only did she raise 5 children, but she took in stray kids as well. I know this because my husband, Lynn, was one of them. He saw her as a second Mom and she always welcomed him in her house.

Godspeed, Nancy ... you’ll remain in our hearts forever!

There are so many things to reflect on. As a kid growing up, Mrs. Banks was always understanding (mostly, except when we were causing her grief with some crazy mischief...but that was so rare ). No matter, she was always there when you needed her. Her strength, taking care of 5 kids plus us added “adoptees” was amazing. Only as I became older did I come to appreciate she was also a successful business-lady besides taking care of us, keeping us in check and keeping us out of trouble. Just the last part was a full time job! Looking back I’m not sure how she managed all that. She always made me feel like part of the family. As time passed and we all moved on our relationship evolved to more likes friendship rather than parent-kid. I’m certain she felt all the love the kids had for her, but with mostly boys love is not a word that gets used a lot.

So know we all love you and you’ll be missed, your passing leaves an unfilled vacuum.

What a life she lived. Tim, I believe she lived a blessed life. She was an inspiration for you and the rest of her family.

While we didn't get to see you very often, we will always cherish our memories of our many letters, cards and Christmas packages exchanged through the years. We will hold your memory dear in our hearts, Great Gram.

Bamma was not just a grandmother to me - she was a strong woman who I looked up to. She was the epitome of what a grandmother should be. I'm pretty sure she taught me how to swim in her pool, taught me to like salads, and even made the best sausage patties for breakfast. I'll always cherish all the Gators' games she and Uncle Al took me to in the RV! Thank you Bamma for being the best grandmother and friend I could have.
